When going to school feels impossible

For some children and young people, attending school can become a significant source of stress, overwhelm or distress.

They may experience frequent stomach aches or headaches, become highly anxious the night before school, struggle to get dressed or leave the house, or experience emotional distress before, during or after the school day.

This is sometimes described as “school refusal”, but the term School Can’t offers a more compassionate and accurate way to understand what may be happening.

Rather than assuming a child is being oppositional, defiant or simply choosing not to attend, School Can’t encourages us to ask:

What is making school feel too difficult right now?
